If the director doesn't give the writing team the freedom to write a good story, then it will come across as lack-luster. As a guy who i currently directing a project, I can't let my ideas get in the way of production. I can propose ideas, but my main focus is to keep everyone on track and make sure the team is working on the same project and not trying to do their own thing, and because of that, I have to trust the witers more than myself to make well-written stories. There's more to a show than animation. The writing in the episode seems off. I've said it before, and Il say it again: it feels as if the writers took the most popular phrases of the characters and tried to build the characters off that, making them fall flat and makes them come across as two dimensional. As a musicfag, I payed closer attention to the music, and what I have to say is that it's alright. Nothing special, just a guitar riff here, a little phrase here, and it isn't an accompaniment like it should be. Hopefully maturely. It missed the point of Darpy gags being either very short and or far in the backround, the Scootaloo chicken billboard joke (right after a short flight scene, that lovely moment got killed by the chicken joke), and I was shown a screenshot of a paraspriteface hidden in the clouds. This fan-episode' is clearly a step DOWN from the show rather than trying to take it any further. It wasn't made for love of the show but rather zeal for the fandom which shows, and as you said shows the mentality If it were intended to be a goofy parody like FiW or a short <1 minute video like the Dan Vs. FiM videos, I'd have zero problems with that. But, if you're advertising the video as a full authentic fanmade episode, you should have a tone reminiscent of an authentic episode. Can you think of a single sonic fanwork or episode that lives up to and does good for the series? I think I overestimated Zach's ability to act as a writer and director, clearly he has the talent for the latter but not the former. It's clearly going for low humor, and I got a stack of cheap laughs out of it. Snowdrop goes for feels, but it didn't quite evoke the feelpower it should due to dialogue issues. Rainboom is never going to win any awards for senious storytelling. It's the MLP equivalent of a Loony Tunes short, it deliberately hops away from the storyline to make a joke (Derpy scene), but it's obvious early on that this animation is going to be LOLRANDOM as intended. They picked a VA that didn't have much experience with the role and was pretty much entirely reliant on the director to get the impression down. A lot of nuances (especially the voice cracks and wildly fluctuating pitch are missing) are missing entirely, and the delivery on some lines contradicts how she speaks on the show The glaring part is that her raspiness sometimes is missing, leading to lines sometimes sounding far too girlish or nerdy. Very rarely do we hear the raspiness disappear on the show. Her pitch is too high on some lines, which leads to her sounding far too girly and pretty much messing up the impression. Finally a lot of emotion is missing from some lines, or rather improper emotion. I'm pretty sure Flamingo had bothered to seek out scenes from the show and study how Rainbow Dash behaves in certain situations the dialogue and delivery would be significantly better.
