Coming from an area with a significant Muslim population, the hijab is a little weird from a women's rights perspective. Although technically mandated by scripture, the woman can willingly wear it as an un-coerced expression of her faith. This causes problems because it's difficult to determine whether it is or isn't forced upon its wearer. It's kind of like a woman's decision (or lack thereof) to wait until marriage to have sex. She can make such a decision on her own, but if it's technically mandated by scripture, is she really making that decision independently? I'd argue she is, but there could be points made to argue she isn't.
