I guess it depends on how much normal society knows about gem stuff. From the old structures and corrupted gems that've been around for thousands of years (not to mention historical documents from humans that've interacted with them in the past.) Plus I'm sure word of the Diamond invasion and gems immigrating to the planet over the last two years must've reached someone outside of Beach City.

Honestly, the lack of any world building is one of the show's weaker points. Granted, we stay within Beach City 90% of the time, but still.
