Here is a tip to try and make this happen less: try to stay perfectly still on bed after you wake up and you are thinking of your dream. The reason why we forget dreams quickly after waking up is because muscular movement takes priority over subconscious stuff immediately after waking up since that is how the brain and body get ready for the day. They get rid of "useless" stuff such as dream memory and fire up all other "engines" on the body. Think of it as a computer's RAM memory, if you will: you do one thing for a while, then the next one and it immediately forgets about the last one for that. This should greatly improve your dream retention over time.
This is why some people have "Dream Journals" that they write in as soon as they wake up. Alternatively, you could pull out your phone and record a short video of yourself describing the dream for later inspiration.
