To hide the whole thing from Japanese fans is even worse than lying about the dex cut, not only from a moral standpoint due to potential false advertisement and the cold bucket thrown at people who had to buy the game to find out about it, but also, just for sales in general. Most sales for Nintendo right now are from Japan's mobile market, and the Switch plays a big role in that.

With this essentially still being a main Pokemon game on a console that can be handheld, they are now risking their very literal core of customers with the game that is single-handedly responsible for the boom of mobile games in Japan. One thing is to piss off overseas fans, that they can recover from, but pissing off their local fans is pretty much a death sentence if they plan to do nothing about it from here on out.
