That is precisely what they mean. Our generation does not treat girls badly enough for them, therefore, we do not know how to treat them in their eyes. No, I am not even memeing: my grandpa, more than once, would inquire me for my opinion on this topic and would make it very clear how he thought men are superior and women had to know their place and respect men unconditionally. Shamelessly so and without a single minced word.
I feel like they're confusing generations somewhat. The "traditional gender roles generation" was the WWII generation (also called the Greatest Generation by some people), and their lives after the war in the 1950s.
The Boomers, their children, changed gender roles a lot in the 1960s and it's largely due to them that it's become more "progressive".
