Certain people with certain goals can dissuade the media from highlighting certain things. Like to hear some people tell it you'd think the Pearl Harbor attacks were the only bad thing Japan did during WWII, they'd either downplay or not know about the Nanking Massacre. Hell, I don't think I ever would have heard of the Cambodian Genocide if it weren't for the movie The Killing Fields.

Hell to this day the terrors of Soviet Russia are really downplayed and Mao is disturbingly still held in high regard by many people despite scoring a larger body count than Hitler.
