i think thomas more is a pretty cool guy. eh challenges kings and is executed and doesn’t afraid of anything.
I Can’t imagine why he is portrayed as forever alone- he was a successful philosopher, lawyer and family man. He published Utopia, which was a remarkable criticism against feudal societies for its day and was a progressive contrast to the destructive and religious politics of time. He most notably challenged King Henry the VIII on his questionable legal decisions concerning his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, and was executed for attempting to hold the king accountable to the law. He was a catholic humanist, and was a good friend of another well known philosopher, Erasmus. He openly challenged Martin Luther in a series of letters, which at some points, became incredibly scatological in nature, and attempted to stop William Tyndale’s translation of the bible, in accordance with the law of the day in England. There is a play which portrays him as the main character and details the account of his trial, A Man for All seasons.
If he is being portrayed as forever alone, it is probably due to the fact that he stood alone in defense of what he thought was unjust and unconscionable, while those closest to him abandoned him to be executed.
