Found the cause (thank you, Firefox)! We must use the same filter list in our ad blockers! The EasyList filter list has the rule /ad7. in it (all of the raw rules for the filter list are here). I'm not privy to filter rule syntax, but I'm guessing that rule means "block all requests to any URL that has 'ad7.' after the last slash in said URL." The address of the image is https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/879/817/ad7.png, thus it's blocked. The front page image is a smaller, JPEG version of this image with a different URL, so the rule doesn't match.
