I remember how Dan Harmon disowned this movie because Spielberg made it way scarier than intended.

What did he expect? Making things that will scare the hell out of kids has been Spielberg's thing ever since he became a director. If you have Spielberg produce a kids movie about a sentient house that eats people, Spielberg will make it as scary as it can be.
