DAN w LOKI Many people who know nothing else about Norse mythology have at least heard of Loki, the wily trickster god. Loki was a scheming coward who cared only for shallow pleasures and self-preservation. He was by turns playful, malicious, and helpful, but always irreverent and nihilistic. Snorri describes him as handsome, but temperamental and dangerously guileful.61 Loki alternately helped both the gods and the giants, depending on which course of action was most pleasurable and advantageous to him at the time. Several of the tales feature him harming the gods in some way, often by stealing something or someone from among them. But it was (almost) always he who then rectified the situation typically by some bizarre, convoluted means and often ultimately brought some great benefit to the gods in the process. He was frequently presented as a companion of Thor and/or Odin, but their friendships, though perhaps close, were quite stormy. The equally temperamental Thor, in particular, sometimes found himself in the position of singing Loki's praises one minute and then grabbing him by the collar and threatening his life the next. Loki's father was the giant Farbauti (Old Norse Fárbauti, "Cruel Striker 62), and his mother was an otherwise unknown beingi Laufey (the meaning of which is also unknown) or Nal (Nál Needle 63). His wife was the goddess Sigyn ("Friend of Victory" with whom he had a son named Narfi or Nari (perhaps "Corpse" With the giantess Angrboda (Angrbooa, "Distress-Bringer"66) he also named fathered Jormungand, the world sern enemy; Hel, the god I and r narticular Meiculn AVE., Ul 91SI St. 913.383..
