It's probably the nostalgia filter, but the fedora/white knight image felt relatively more self-aware and amusingly ironic than soyboys

100% agree, the fedora guy has such a smug energy that it used to make laugh like mad back in the days.

Nostalgia must play a part in there, but I also believe that a lot of the memes are a lot more mean-spirited today. Especially the ones made to depict "the other side" on any issue.
