1978 Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Commercial is a viral commercial for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda that features two anthropomorphic cat characters at a party who claim that the host should use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to cover their litter box's odor. The ad was posted to Twitter / X in August 2020 by @TooFatForTumblr and inspired fan art and content featuring the characters over the following years, particularly in the furry community.

Origin

The Arm & Hammer cat commercial purportedly first aired in 1978, according to X[1] user @ani_obsessive (Animation Obsessive), although the exact date and year are unconfirmed. In the commercial, two female anthropomorphic cat characters are at a party. One cat, only known as Jessica, suggests to the other that the host should use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to deal with the litter box's odor. The other cat is enamored by Jessica's advice and tells her she's so sophisticated.

The earliest known user to post the video was now-deleted X[2] user @TooFatForTumblr on August 6th, 2020, garnering over 3,900 likes in five years.

The ad garnered viral spread over the following years, inspiring fan art and content. On November 15th, 2020, X[3] user @captynz posted fan art of the characters that received over 3,900 likes and 650 reposts in five years. This is the earliest known work of fan art based on the characters.



On November 19th, X[4] user @nicnak044 posted a piece of art based on the cahracters that garnered over 870 likes and 130 reposts in a year, before it was deleted from X.



On September 10th, 2023, X[5] user @WORMZ1LLA posted fan art of the characters, as well as fan art of the characters from the 1970 'Special Barbie Month' commercial, garnering over 5,600 views and 935 reposts in over a year.

On November 29th, 2024, X[6] user @sexybread_png posted fanart of the characters that garnered over 31,000 likes and 3,200 reposts in four months.
