For a while I just lived with it, after all YouTube has a right to make money and watching the occasional ad is not too high of a price to pay, but then they became more frequent, back-to-back, long, and honestly really unpleasant to listen to. It also doesn't help that they will demonetize someone at the drop of a hat while also removing their choice to run ads, so it wasn't a difficult choice to switch. Bonus, it means I never see an unwanted ad in my own home now.

Special mention for Tubemate so you can just download the content rather than use data. Having a family plan that comes out to under $70 a month is nice.
