I don't think they feel so bad about the hugs themselves. If you go to the dummy at the start of Chapter 2, you have the option to hug the dummy now that no one is looking, which Kris seems fine with. They have many valid reasons to feel uneasy towards Ralsei, but that unease has little to do with distance, and Ralsei is still a very fluffy boy.

Besides, we need to hug him after the acid boat ride to get the best out of the post-Spamton talk.
