There never were that many to begin with compared to mostly anything else. People just point more fingers at it, but it was always a niche trope even then. Shonen, mecha and moe tropes dominated most anime for over a decade, and today, you can see just about any type of anime and some go as fast as they surface, kind of like with memes today too.
