Details in image. The reason Donut Blocks in the Mario series do not always look like donuts is because they are not actually based on donuts. Their original Japanese name is 277 (Chikuwa Lift), referring to chikuwa, a type of Japanese fishcake. However, when chikuwa are viewed from above, they appear more like a log, explaining their oblong shape in the 3D Mario games.
