(THE DARK KNIGHT) With building terror, an insane guy does something way beyond the bounds of human decency Really pushes forward themes of totalitarian persecution and disassociation "THE LAST THING I WOULD EVER DO" (THE TRUMAN SHOW) Watch a guy get gaslit and simultaneously realize he's getting gaslit Great acting accompanied by a killer Philip Glass score Heath Ledger legit pulls off one of the best acting jobs of all time (SPARTACUS) It's a hella old movie, but this scene remains tearjerking The realization that all these men would die for each other is so effective SPOR "D-I-G" (HOLES) THE BEACH SCENE (HER) RELATIONSHIP MONTAGE (UP) The long-awaited payoff to the Camp Green Lake counselors being d---- the whole movie The prettiest scene in a really pretty movie In a few minutes, tells the complete story the movie was trying to tell THE FIREPLACE OOGWAY ASCENDS (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) (KUNG FU PANDA) Literally a four-minute unbroken shot of a teenage boy crying in front of a fireplace But we've all been there and Timothee Chalamet is perfect at portraying it Also it has "Song on the Beach" which is possibly Arcade Fire's best work The best mentor death scene in film The guy turns into flower petals with John Powell music what more could you want "HELLO DARKNESS" (THE GRADUATE) So many movies show people in love do something impulsive then ride off into the sunset, but this movie deals with the consequences of "what happens now?" And it does it without dialogue, simply with facial expressions of dread and anxiety THE TUNNEL SCENE (WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) In the midst of a whimsical kids' movie, this scene is batshit crazy There's like video of chicken mutilation and s---, what the f--- "ALL WORK AND NO PLAY" "NOT MY TEMPO" (WHIPLASH) (THE SHINING) J.K. Simmons is The scene where Jack really loses it I love this movie Kubrick made Shelley Duvall shoot this 86 times so what you're seeing is genuine exhaustion and anxiety OPENING CREDITS (WALL-E) The most effective opening to a Pixar movie: the juxtaposition of desolate pollution with gay music The rest of the movie is highkey mid but the parts on earth are really good When people say they love "Up," they mostly mean this scene NEARER MY GOD TO THEE (TITANIC) TOOK The synthesis of historical tragedy in one four-minute scene You're watching the death of the 19th century TSIMTSUM (LIFE OF PI) everything The moment You don't see his he realizes face, just his back he's lost as he watches a ship carrying his whole family and all his possessions sink to the ocean floor It's super effective LOVE ON A REAL TRAIN (RISKY BUSINESS) This whole movie is a great example of neo- Impressionism and this scene is so artful My parents think I like this movie because of the sex but no it's because of the tangerine dream music and low frame rate a super effective villain and this scene is the best example Real hatred and terror here CRASH SCENE (FLIGHT) Probably the best aviation scene from any film Despite executes excellent CRM being drunk, of all time the pilot There's so much sexual tension, it's one of the hottest scenes in film history and they don't even touch THE HENLEY SEQUENCE (THE SOCIAL NETWORK) The whole movie is excellent but this scene tells a complete story in just two minutes The aberrated filming is great and big brownie -points for rowing THE SCHINDLER JEWS TODAY (SCHINDLER'S LIST) 00 MONEYPENNY SHAVES THE DUNKIRK SEQUENCE (ATONEMENT) BOND (SKYFALL) Backdropped by a stunning set, that hot black chick shaves Daniel Craig A seven-minute unbroken tracking shot of Dunkirk at the height of the evacuation The whole movie is really sad and most people cry during the Holocaust parts, but this is where I break down Why? Because almost all these hundreds of old people primary sources are now dead. The idea of losing that much history breaks my heart. "BROOKS WAS HERE" (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) Incredibly tragic look into those conditioned to prison His explanation of the cruelty of life on the outside is just so sad man OPENING CREDITS (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS) HITLER YOUTH (DOWNFALL) The dad of the main character kid finds his son's Hitler Youth group and tries to convince them to surrender but they're brainwashed A vivid portrayal of one of the most tragic parts of history The best opening credits of any film I've ever seen No words, no fancy editing, literally just candid shots of Paris in springtime cut together with jazz music It's so beautiful man THE ESCAPE (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) One of the cleverest horror sequences TEST DRIVE (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON) Extremely good cinematography and John Powell's very best music When I first saw this scene I instantly knew this would be my favorite movie ever No jumpscares, just sheer chicanery Anthony Hopkins did such a good job here Better than Christopher Nolan's movie and it's 10 years older DOCKING (INTERSTELLAR) Extremely effective music and pacing Nolan's habit of mounting cameras on his models is so cool BOOK REPORT (THREE O'CLOCK HIGH) This is the The building most sexual tension underrated between Jerry 80s movie fr and his teacher and the comedic payoff is hilarious Also Tangerine Dream score so brownie points CLAIRE DE LUNE (OCEAN'S ELEVEN) The tranquil payoff to two hours of high- stakes insanity No dialogue, everyone just seems so content BIKER GANGS (AKIRA) Super ahead of its time for the 80s, the animation and music are incredible The most Vaporwave film of all time HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO (SHREK 2) The single best animated action sequence of all time; the combination of comedy and tension is so well-made Shrek 2 is the best of the series THE CONCERT (GATTACA) A concert for the Aryans contrasted with mass-arrest for the untermenschen THE LAST FIGHT (GOON) Shot like an old-school propaganda film, and it's entirely unintentional Some f------ awesome Schubert music which is a meta joke all its own God The best use of opera in Supermac's e film LAUNCH SEQUENCE (FIRST MAN) Damien Chazelle likes shooting in a documentary style, so this is shot like a documentary about Apollo 11 filmed today PARAN With no dialogue, it portrays aspiration, hope, obsession, and determination like almost nothing else I've ever seen THE FRONT LINE (1917) The whole movie has a dull brown and gray color palette, this is the first scene with vivid greens and it's so beautiful The unique situation of seeing the men you have to Isave and not being able to Isave them is so frustrating, and the building tension and payoff are great "RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES" (APOCALYPSE NOW) Such a bombastically over- the-top scene thet it's impossible to not adore America, f--- yeah DESERT MEETING (CASINO) Scorsese's best cinanatography, great music choice too I love seeing Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro play mobsters together ALMOST CAUGHT (CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) A really fast-paced, well-directed scene with great actors Leonardo DiCaprio is so damn smooth PUKING (TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE) Usually I hate lowbrow body fluid humor but I die laughing everytime I see this one Matt Parker and Trey Stone have that comedic special sauce SKULL SCENE (DJANGO UNCHAINED) Tarantino isn't my favorite director but man he knows how to do tension Leonardo DiCaprio plays an excellent plantation owner THE HUNS ATTACK (MULAN) The reason this is my favorite Disney movie Grants a small intimation into the sheer terror of seeing thousands of horsemen on a ridge overlooking you BATTLE OF ATLANTA WOUNDED (GONE WITH THE WIND) Extremely That crane shot modern- looking is so effective filmmaking for 1939 There was no CGI, so this is all practical effects and extras THE WHITE WOLF (BALTO) I actually think the movie's kind of mid but every time I see it this scene in particular makes me cry It's about finding courage against adversity, it's fantastic Alec Baldwin's best acting work ever SALES SPEECH (GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS) Instills legit fear in the characters and the audience THE ECSTASY OF GOLD (THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY) Revolutionary filmmaking for the 60s, really creates a sense of confusion and isolation Also Ennio Morricone's very best music "LIGHTS OUT!" (THERE WILL BE BLOOD) Excellent tension, beautiful cinematography, based Johnny Greenwood score This movie is so damn beautiful and this scene especially BLUTO'S SPEECH (ANIMAL HOUSE) Seeing a drunken idiot do a comedic monologue is just so funny Also John Belushi was so high when shooting this that he said later he didn't remember it so points GOD SPEAKS TO MOSES (THE PRINCE OF EGYPT) Most movies that portray God show him as a booming, powerful figure, but this God is a softspoken, gentle friend Plus the music is some of Hans Zimmer's best work BAPTISM (O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?) It's a hypnotic scene: against a stunning autumnal background, a bunch of hot women lure the gang into a river That f------ church hymn is stuck in my head AVE MARIA (FANTASIA) After the legit terrifying Bald Mountain scene, this is a cathartic coda A true message of world peace made at a time when the world was in flames INTERROGATION (PATRIOTS' DAY) This movie as a whole is underrated and the acting by the interrogator is especially good Makes me terrified of what the FBI can really do FBI THE LASER (GOLDFINGER) The building tension + British humor + John Barry music = awesome "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!" LIFE OF A BULLET (LORD OF WAR) Really creative way to do opening credits and show how a bullet goes from conception to firing Nicholas Cage's second or third best film TRAIN ROBBERY (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD) Roger Deakins's very best work, makes a train look like some Greek colossus The whole sequence is like a dark fairytale Por bad dream, it's just magic filmmaking THE PRINTER ASSAULT (OFFICE SPACE) Who knew that smashing a printer with baseball bats while rap plays would be so comedically effective? We've all wanted to do it, this is wish fulfillment
