In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the Crystal Stars are artifacts with two purposes: 1. gathered together, they open the Thousand-Year Door, and 2. separately, they each grant a special power to the user. Most bosses that possess Crystal Stars either do not use them at all, or are only aware of the first purpose: Hooktail's star is trapped in her stomach, so she is not using it. Crump has two stars, Doopliss is but is only aware of the aware that his door-opening purpose, star is valuable, but and is not using them. he is not using it. However, Grubba is special in that he is actively using the Crystal Star for nefarious purposes, via a machine. In fact, he does not seem to be aware of its door-opening purpose and uses it for its power only. Cortez has so little use for his star that he lets Mario have it for free. In battle, he has two moves whereby he increases his attack and defense by 3, respectively. The star in Poshley Heights is not claimed by anyone when Mario finds it. When Mario obtains Grubba's Crystal Star, he learns the Power Lift move, which grants him the same ability to raise attack and defense by up to 3 as Grubba had.
