It is possible that it was removed to not confuse or disappoint players who expected the egg to contain Yoshi. M In the data of Super Mario 64, an unused sprite of an egg that looks like a Yoshi egg can be found. It was discovered shortly after the game's release and has, for decades, been assumed to be related to Yoshi's appearance on the roof upon collecting all 120 stars (e.g. that he was planned to hatch from it). However, newly surfaced development files reveal it was actually meant to be Hoot the Owl's egg instead. The egg is called "bird_egg", where "bird_" is the prefix used for all Hoot-related code; in addition, a deleted "bird_egg" object was found next to Hoot's files in the data. It is possible that the egg was removed due to it being either confusing or disappointing for players to approach what clearly appears to be a Yoshi egg just to have something that is not Yoshi hatch from it.
