45 mins Wanted to share an happy story from work today!! There was a radio call at 11:30 from guest services letting us know that a 5 year old boy who was having his birthday at the zoo only had 1 friend show up to his birthday party. It absolutely broke my heart. They asked if anyone could come help him have a happier birthday.... YOU GUYS.... our team pulled together in a way ANYONE would and should be proud of. We had goats in party hats arrive. Ferrets and a bearded dragon from program animals showed up. Bird show brought a sun conure, and African gray parrot, and a rat. Rhinos, great apes, meerkats all made him artwork. A giant tiger puppet and red panda mascot visited him. Others from around the zoo just showed up to sing happy birthday. His favorite animals are tigers, so our AMAZING tiger team took him behind the scenes to see a tiger training demo. And he met a penguin named Jello, who painted him a rainbow painting since that was his favorite color. He met a 150 year old Aldabran Tortoise. He got stuffed animal gifts purchased from zoo staff, and an extra goodie bag to take home. You guys, this job is magical. Some days we stop in awe at our jobs. Some days we may forget just how neat our career in this field is. And some days it takes a lonely boy on his birthday to remind us just how amazing and magical we can be. *Edit* this wasnt a post to brag about my facility. This was to brag about ALL OF US IN THIS FIELD. Because what we do is so freakin cool.
