Following the trend set by the HEV Mk III, the Mk IV employs a powered exoskeleton and electronic protective shell, finely directed by an onboard computer. A plethora of integrated sensors and medical equipment keep the user aware, informed, and insured at all times. Development of the Mk IV began in 1994, with the Black Mesa Lambda design corp heading the project. Backed by DARPA funding, development was contracted to ILC Dover and Garrett AiResearch (now AlliedSignal), both veterans of spacesuit design. By 1998, the result was a production-ready, state-of-the-art multipurpose environment suit that leveraged the capabilities of modern material sciences and computerized electronics to deliver unprecedented performance. Toroidal Joints The joints of the HEV Mk IV are of a soft construction, consisting of stacked gel-filled toroids. The joints flex with the user in a manner similar to an accordion, with one side of each of the toroids in the joint compressing, and the other side expanding along with the gel. The gel is semi-compressible, and is highly impact resistant, serving as a trauma mitigator. Each toroid is built from a woven electroactive polymer, allowing it to selectively compress parts of itself, forcing the gel to fill and expand the remaining volume of the toroid, and thus articulate its shape. Under unpowered conditions, the user is easily able to flex each joint, as the gel will freely move to accommodate the expanding and compressing sides of the joint. With computer-controlled direction, the joints can be forced to follow, support, and enhance user inputs by articulating each joint's shape. Each plate is made of multiple layers, one of which being the sensor layer which converts kinetic readings into electronic signals, and the remaining layers being sheets of woven reactive polymer that hardens in response to the sensor layer's detection of physical trauma. This allows the Mk IV to soak up impacts, whether it's from blunt force or from projectiles. What I like the most about the HEV MKIV is how it is compatible with the PCV (Powered Combat Vest) charging stations used by some of the HECU soldiers.
Compatability stuff like that gives me life.

You just know that HDD's going to suffer a head crash 5 minutes into the Resonance cascade, and now I need a video of Gordon Freeman bursting into flames immediately upon being zapped by a Vortigaunt due to the Li-ion batteries exploding upon being overcharged and overheated by literal alien space lightning.
