Paper Mario - What happens to inactive partners

Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In Paper Mario, no in-game explanation exists of what happens to inactive partners; they merely shrink and fly into Mario. An unused pouch icon suggests that the shrinking is not just metaphorical, but that Mario may be literally carrying them around in miniature form in a pouch. Whenever Mario changes his active party members in Paper Mario, a visual effect occurs whereby the party member jumps into the air while shrinking, and flies into Mario. The other party member emerges from inside Mario in a shrunken state and grows. This effect has no in-game explanation, existing only as a visual shorthand for changing the active partner. No in-game text mentions what happens to inactive partners. Not Items? Items Pre-release materials for the game show that a pouch icon was at one point used in the battle menu. It could not have been the item icon. MENU 1/in もちもの なかま 3xE 5 ब्र ってい A menu screenshot reveals that the pouch icon was labeled "", meaning "comrades" or "allies". The icon remains, unused, in the finished game's data. This suggests that the partners were originally supposed to be kept inside an actual (likely magical) pouch, which would have given an in-universe explanation to partner changing. Due to the pouch being blue with a yellow button, same as Mario's overalls, it is also possible that it was supposed to be a depiction of an (unseen) pocket on his overalls instead. ource: tcrf.net/Paper Mario/Unused Graphics; Supper Mario Broth, screenshots taken in a N64 emulator, game: Paper Mario (NA, N64)
