Costumes are directly based off of historical fashion plates or portraits, or are otherwise period-accurate and/or realistic. Corsets are portrayed matter-of-factly as a means of propping up breasts from the waist (rather than hanging them from the shoulder like a modern bra), not as Patriarchal torture devices or waist constrictors. If a Period Drama, either every POC character is a documented historical figure with surviving portraits and their own Wikipedia page, or the show is set in a non-European location. If a Fantasy, POC characters get their own country to come from. Either way, blackwashing and Diversity Quotas are neither required nor used. Storyline contains both "Upstairs" subplot (following the upper classes and their high-stakes political power-plays) and a "Downstairs" subplot (where the maids and servants get their own character arcs, instead of just being nameless extras). Brightly colored costumes, oversaturated color palettes, clean and richly decorated decor, and a boldly optimistic aesthetic. (Contrast to the black and brown costumes, undersaturated sepia camera tint, beige and filthy decor, and cynical nihilism that Hollywood is addicted to.) The show gets praised, rather than panned, by YouTubers who specialize in history, sewing, and other relevant topics.
