Radical Unschooling

304 I am a 24 year old who was unschooled since the 4th grade. AMA submitted 13 years ago * (last edited 13 years ago) by unschooler I was lucky to live in Portland, which had (and still has) a great home-school community. My parents gave me the choice after third grade of staying in school or unschooling. I chose to unschool. It was not religiously motivated in any way, though I did meet other home schoolers for whom it likely was. I did fine in elementary school, but hated all the homework (busy work). My mom was great at finding other communities of home-schoolers to spend time with, and she helped me find resources when I wanted to learn something specific. Learned a lot of vocab through Magic the gathering and RPGs, taught myself to develop websites and program. Started community college at 18, transferred to Portland State, got a B.S. in math, and am now in California getting a Ph.D in statistics.     Learning to read: My oldest is 7.5 yr old in "second grade" and has always been "unschooled" She wanted to learn to read. I bought the good and beautiful literature curriculum. The kinder prep and then kinder curriculum. Plus bob books, letter flip cards, wooden letters etc. The curriculum comes with videos which we love so far. (Before this we did the usual closed captions on, playing games, video games, teach your monster to read app, and abc mouse) It's not going great tho. I'm getting frustrated, i don't know why. And she is getting frustrated. And now our joy of learning is not there for this topic. The prep course is a lot of like vowels and two letter sound blending. But i get why this is hard to learn because it isn't practical. Because it isn't even words yet. I'm thinking because she is older i need to maybe move on to harder. But at the same time "they" keep stressing, they need to know the sounds all letters make and how to blend before moving on. Blah. It's been challenging in society because 1. Her acting class for her age group she is the only one who can't read. 2. In our homeschool coop she is the only one who can't read in her age group. 3. At girlscouts they are all her age and can read and write and she can't. (I have feelings about this on my end like I'm doing her a disservice, so looking for support on this from my community please ) When i talk to her about it she is fine with it she advocates for herself and says i can't read yet please help me, and they do. And i keep telling myself, it's normal for homeschool kids to be behind in this. That's my mantra. She can't excell at all subjects at once and she certainly is advanced in other aspects. So for those who have older kids who have been unschooled by you and can read and write. How did this go in your household? How did they learn? What was your journey. And at what age did this happen please? My child is 8.5 and i recently went to a homeschool event where a reading tutor expressed her disappointment that i missed the window and now my child will struggle I was under the impression that my child would naturally learn as her desire grew as with all things in this human life.     ... August 22, 2017 How do you deal with family that disapproves and doesn't understand Unschooling? Actually they don't even approve of homeschool. I don't even talk about my unschooling beliefs cause that would just be too much. First off my partner doesn't approve but he's not stopping me from doing it. But he wants to see work. He gets upset cause he thinks that we all sleep in and that the kids will video games all day. And then there's the fact that my two sons are "behind". My older son has done some public schooling and was in special education. And my younger son has the same issues he did at that age, but in addition is more emotionally delayed. He only recently was fully potty trained and is kindergarten age. My older son is 3rd grade age and can't read very well. I think he actually can read more than he chooses. I believe he's been totally turned off from reading because it was shoved down his throat daily and he was in special classes outside of his regular classroom to work on his reading skills. So now he doesn't want to read. I try to explain that but he doesn't get it. And then just the other day I was texting my older sister And she asked if the kids were in school. I said I was homeschooling again. And she basically cursed me out, talked down to me like I'm a child and used my emotional issues that i recently opened up to her about to say thats why i keep my kids home or something. It was hurtful on so many levels. She's a really open minded person. We agree on so many things. I knew she wasn't into the idea of homeschool but i never expected such an aggressive and hurtful reaction. I told her i don't need to defend myself about how i choose to raise my children. I just feel really hurt and alone in my beliefs. But i know that school isn't for my kids. Last year my oldest did half a year of public school and i saw the steady decline in his emotional health. He was beginning to become depressed. And my younger son is emotionally more like a 3 or 4 year old. I think the large classroom, and being away from home would be too much. He has anger outbursts and is also academically behind. He also gets extremely upset and down on himself if he's not good at something. I fear that going to school would completely wreck his self esteem and he would act out. And probably label himself as the "bad kid". Sorry I'm just kind of venting. Any advice on dealing with opposition when you are not a confrontational person? 7 12 Comments

My 10 year old wants to learn to read. She's very frustrated about not being able to, like she thinks she's stupid and it just breaks our hearts. She is so good at so much, but focusing on paper has never been her strong point, that is actually why we got into unschooling to begin with. It has been years honestly with no issues. She reads D--- and Jane with my mother, no one else, and tbh I kinda think she has memorized enough to play through those books, but Idk. Anytime she tries to read something else she just makes up what it says (she's an AMAZING story teller). She wants to write stories, but right now she can't. So she just tells them, she'll record herself telling them sometimes. Her vocabulary is broader than the majority of adults I know, including myself. I notice most people say kids learn to read by reading to them, especially when they're little. She never had any interest in that. I stopped trying when I realized I was literally forcing her to sit with me and read. She hated it, it wasn't fun for her and so I stopped when she was still a toddler. She would still like to sit with my mother and be read to though, so it's not like no one ever read to her. We've tried more than once to help her learn to read, but it just ends up frustrating her and in turn whoever is trying to help. Then she wants to quit so we quit. Trying to force her to do it any

My main concern is, as an unschooler, my son is probably not at the same reading level as someone his age in public school. I keep getting bombarded by family that he's "behind" or is getting behind. I'm just worried that he might get made fun of if he doesn't read well. I read in other groups that their unschoolers sometimes didn't start reading until 9 or 10 years old. How can I make sure this won't be a problem with a group like Cub Scouts? Or are there any other groups I could sign him up for that I wouldn't have to worry about ridicule?? Please be aware that it can be a very poor experience, and I would caution anyone against pursuing it. I am 35 now, and still continue to struggle with social interactions and making friends, even though I know all of the "what about socialization?" rebuttals which don't actually happen in practice. Yes, public schools are flawed, but unschooling is not the answer. I was unschooled from 2nd grade until graduation, and my mom was a very prominent figure in the unschooling world so I knew many other families and can say these experiences were not just my own. I want to warn anyone who is considering this practice: Most adults don't have ideas of what to learn or what they want to do, let alone children; expecting children to direct their own education this way is idealistic at best, neglectful at worst. I can't tell you how many times I was berated and yelled at for "not having enough interests" and being blamed for my lack of an education. I was depressed, isolated, and most of all I blamed myself for the failure of an un-thought-out system. And when it came to socializing, it was the same: I was blamed for being friendless, i was told I was failing at unschooling and needed to try harder, and I had nowhere to turn to for support: other unschooling families just fed me the same unwavering dogma of "you're free to do what you want, stop complaining and figure it out" or "how DARE you say you have no friends or social life, I'll get you all this literature some other mom wrote about how socialization is not a problem in unschooling, that'll set you right." On the other hand, it was highly discouraged to associate with any "public schoolers" because of their dangerous ideas. Unschooling puts the blame on the child, and allows neglectful parents to flourish. If you're uneducated, it's your fault, since you (as an uneducated child) are in charge of your education. Some (most) parents, mine included, use unschooling as a way to let their children run free and absolve themselves of any guilt for developmental delays, since the child is in charge. (Oh he can't read? That's okay, he'll learn it when he feels like it...)
