In 2016, a software developer named Azer Koçulu deleted his open-source Javascript package from NPM (a Javascript package manager). The deleted package was called "left-pad". It was only 11 lines of code that simply padded a string with characters. Koçulu deleted it because he had a dispute with NPM and Kik Messenger. NPM had forcibly taken the package name "kik" from him, which he was using it, to give it to Kik. In response, Koçulu deleted all of the packages he had submitted to NPM. It turns out, "left-pad" was a dependency of several major software packages, such as Babel, Webpack, and React. These are all critical to Javascript and widely used by many individuals, as well as big tech companies like Facebook, Spotify, and Netflix.
