I don't typically watch T.V., the reason l'm sure is obvious. But when I do it's usually movies or DVD's and crap that I can put subtitles on. My question to you is, what do the mane 6 "sound" like? And how would you describe some of the songs? It's weird enough typing this and only knowing the words through meaning having never heard them, but try your best to describe what these main characters sound like so l can enjoy the show in a brighter context. I've only recently just started to watch SE1. Beats me, so I'm going to try comparing to paintings and see if that ends up making any goddamn sense Applejack: Think Jackson P------ (if you don't know any of these artists, google is your friend), specifically the stuff he's most famous for: splatter work. Her voice is rough, crude and maddeningly inconsistent (she's clearly supposed to sound like a southerner, but bronies STILL argue about whether she sounds more like a Texan, an Appalachian, etc.). A lot of people don't like her voice for those reasons. Key words: broad, colorful Rarity: Consider Da Vinci's anatomical studies. Precise, measured, crisp and clean, and above all, accurate. Her voice lacks some of the more "spontaneous" flourishes of other characters, stuff like cracks and (non-deliberate) irregular inflections. Key words: deliberate, precise Fluttershy: I'm going to raise some eyebrows from my hearing-enabled brethren for making this comparison, but look at some archetypal Norman Rockwell. What's he known for? Paintings that are comfortable, easy to relate to, and above all, safe. He uses a lot of soft colors, and it's easy to overlook some of the actual artistry which he definitely did put into his work because of that veneer of comfort. Likewise, Fluttershy's voice is soft, soothing, and lulls you so much that it's easy to overlook the content of what she says. Very angular, very emotionally expressive, but also deceptively simple, in terms of both word choice (which your subtitles will give you) and tone (which they won't). Her voice is full of slips, hiccups, and scratches, but like the broken base shapes which Picasso used to build portraits, they're crucial to the ultimate structure of her voice. Key words: rough, unrefined Pinkie Pie: God, I don't know... a Where's Waldo, maybe? There's just so much going on in her voice, there are a lot of little referential nuances which her VA works in (stuff like "Rocky" being a vocal parody of Sylvester Stalone, or the way her "hello!" is usually a descending minor third (an interval associated with insults) when she's about to play a prank or otherwise engage in tomfoolery) that it's impossible to catch it all. Key words: multilayered, uncatagorizable Twilight: She is, of course, the main character, and as is often the case in cartoons, her voice is less distinctive than the secondary characters' (presumably to make it more accessible). She's the perfect freehand circle (sorry, I forget who that story's attributed to): not so much a richly defined independent work as a base voice, without too much unique inflection, which shows the VAs competence but not necessarily her artistry. That's no comment on the VA's artistry, mind, just on what she was presumably asked to provide. Key words: basic, "normal" Hope some of that helps, and either way, good luck with the whole not-being-able-to-hear-since-birth thing
