F--- It. Let's Talk About Half-Life 3 by Gabe Newell, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Valve Hey Friends Last week, Valve made three very important announcements regarding our ongoing goal to create the best possible gaming experience for Steam users everywhere a variety of nevw products and services that would help bring PC gaming to ing room TVs Ve at Valve are trying to the gaming world, where old ideas still rule and stagnant practices have ground progress to a halt. Gamers have long held us up as a testament to the power of challenging gaming dogma, a company that isn't afraid of taking the riskier path and not simply resting on their laurels, like Activision has done for so long with their yearly Call of Duty games You loved Valve for being something different And, of course, you slobbering s----wizards are bitching that we didn't announce an FPS sequel That's seems to be all I hear about these days. "Hey, you know that series your company created that broke the mold of first person shooters and was hailed as a unique, innovative take on the genre? Pump out more sequels to that. Listen, I get it you're invested in the story and we left off on a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger that followed some other cliffhangers that will probably lead to more cliffhangers. A cliffhanger to a story about a mute murder-machine who fights a bunch of aliens and gets caught up in weird inter-dimensional battle. I can understand why you're so invested - it's a well-told story as literary and moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, except with a paper-thin plot where Scout couldn't talk for some reason and pt smashing s--- with a crowbar It's definitely not the inventive gameplay and generation- defining mechanics that made the games so memorable right? Because, if that were the case, you wouldn't care about another sequel - you'd be concerned with whether or not Valve was continuing to innovate the industry. You'd be wondering if we were pushing the boundaries of conventional gaming. You'd be wondering if we were trying new things and thinking bigger than "Gee, I wonder what new, inexplicable race of aliens Gordon Freeman is gonna hurl garbage at with a gravity gun this time Because hey! - it'd be so stupid for us to strive to improve the entire gaming ecosystem, especially when we could be making a single shooter videogame. It'd be a waste of time for us to take huge risks to provide a bigger platform for PC gaming, which will in turn encourage all game makers to produce new and interesting games that will be more accessible than ever. Why encourage all developers to create their own games as challenging to the status quo as Half-Life was at the time, especially when we could make boa cash with Half-Life 3? After all, don't you "hardcore gamers" just love developers who are ruled by greed and puke out sequels to popular shooters instead of exploring new avenues of gaming? ISN'T THAT WHAT YOU LOVE? It's almost as if you just want us to come out with more sequels that lack the sort of surprise that comes with new original games. It's almost as if you're comfortable with a known property and don't want to challenge yourself with new types of games. It's almost as if you just want us to be more like Activision and EA. You want Half-Life 3? You got it. We'll put out a new Half-Life every year. They'll be Origin-only. They'll have to connect to Facebook to play. They'll have assloads of day one DLC They'll have goddamn microtransactions You'll be living your worst nightmare. You'll be speechless You'll be living Half-Life. G-MAN OUT e newell DORKLY

the reason why people yearn for a true sequel to half-life 2 isn't because of the story. it's because it is one of the best games of all time mechanicly, and probably the best shooter we ever had. and after 8-9 years of clone after clone after clone of the same old mechanics, we want a game that pushes the genre just like HL did in 1998 and HL2 did in 2004. episode 1 and 2 were just a continuation of HL2 but it was essentially the same game and a lot of people weren't really happy with that.

I really love Valve and their progressiveness with pushing the meta part of gaming, new input/output methods, new ways of experiencing games. but, at the end of day, we need good games. and that's what Valve is best known for.
