Upvoting would indicate support of his comment, downvoting would be called being butthurt. Win-win for him.

Pushing the dislike button doesn't necessarily mean that the downvoter is frothing at the mouth with rage. It may simply be his childish behavior, or his failure at grammar that prompted it. Or maybe people simply disagree, but don't view it worthy of their time to write a response. Or there could be butthurt people in the audience as you've implied.
