Quick Chemistry lesson;
The stuff in the beaker is Sodium acetate, which is commonly used in heating pads and hand warmers. When the stuff is heated past its melting point and then allowed to cool, it becomes supersaturated.
Put even a toothpick in the liquid stuff, and you give it a point to crystallize. Fwoomp!
