Well, I'm here to try and explain To start, I suggest you go and watch an old Extra Credits video on harassment. I'd post a link for you, but that would be pretty useless in an infographic(butI will pause this infographic while you find it and watch it) Back yet? Awesome Now, let me guess, your reaction to that was "Yeah, that's exactly what we've been doing." and maybe even "How can #Gamergate support that behavior?" I'd say we don't, but of course you wouldn't believe me So allow me to try and illustrate. Let's rewind to the point in time when this video was made and say the gaming community looked like this: The hate-spewing trolls Gamers Now back then, you had a choice, even if it wasn't one you made consciously. You drew battle lines, and for whatever reason, you drew them like this "Them" When you should have drawn them like this Assholes All Gamers We had a chance to stand together, all as gamers versus the extremely vocal few. We would have had to put pressure on publishers and console makers to develop the kinds of tools suggested in the video, but it could have been done But instead, you turned on gamers as a whole. You forced us into bed with real misogynists and real racists, and you continue to give them the attention they seek instead of listening to gamers. But let's take a step back and try and observe what your motivation for this was. Just a heads up, these are some pretty harsh accusations 1. Laziness: It's way easier to blame everyone excepts yourselves. Why take responsibility and work on something when it's easier to just point a finger? 2. Self-serving: Don't think gamers haven't noticed you rarely publish pieces that target publishers. The deals that pay your bills come from publishers, so most of your pieces only go after developers. Also, trying to be positive and to find a solution doesn't generate the clicks that controversal pieces do 3. Egotism - Where would your self worth be if you included yourself in gamers. It really drives up your self-importance to tell yourself you're more progressive than 98% of gamers than to realize your only better than 2% of them So where to go from here? Honestly I don't know. An apology and admission that you at least helped create this problem would go a long way. This is just one element of gamergate but it would be nice to have some common ground on at least one thing

Author has 304 answers and 740.1K answer views. 5y Not that I care that much either way, but it did expose a lot of corrupt game developers and game journalists. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address. Some of the Wikipedia staff were working for George Soros's Open Society Institute.
