Isn't the current animation age wonderful?
Different shows feel they have the room to have their own souls and emotional weight.

Adventure time is explicitly about being torn by your emotions (seriously, watch the inteviews)
Regular Show is about the cultural zeitgeist and normal life
Gravity Falls and Steven have been starting up their Feelercoaster rides
