Along the way, I've discovered why Twitter makes so many women in gamedev feel so terrible Humans are primed to be social creatures on a brain chemistry level. Deep relationships and interactions with others gives us a hit of dopamine. The reason solitary confinement is so cruel is because it robs us of that and screws up our brain chemistry. When we use social media, we're fundamentally looking for hit of dopamine But for some of us that are more socially developed, part of that is our mirror pathways. These help us feel and sense what those around us are sensing so we can react in more socially accepted ways. When people around us feel sad, we pick up on that. Long story short, to be a professional in games - you can't go it alone, you must be social But those that lives their lives on 4chan and Kotaku in action have brains that are far less developed in this area. You see evidence of it everywhere they revel in cynicism and negativity. They're unable to pick up socially on the pain they case us because they are fundamentally not wired in an empathic way. It says a lot that almost none of them actually work in games, while so many of us that they target do They seek the dopamine hit of having their views heard, since they have no other healthy way to share it. But, for us - because we are more social, we soak up all that negativity, which has consequences for other brain systems There's an area in the deep structure of the drain called the smart vagus. It helps us feel calm and relaxed. There are actually neurological pathways that we develop here, leading to how our brain feels overall. Their negativity triggers a fight or flight response in us -making us feel unsafe. Using Twitter and being sea lioned by them, this builds up negative neurological pathways Long story short, the more we use Twitter, the more our fight or flight response kicks in. It's a vicious circle. We're looking for the dopamine hit of having our views heard, and scanning our environments for danger - yet in makes us feel more and more unsafe. Overtime, this becomes the default, making us feel negative and aggressive For me, I will be staying off Twitter. I literally need to starve the neurochemical pathways in my brain that have this fight or flight response activated all the time. And I will consciously seek out other sources of social dopamine, namely time with friends and family

Author has 304 answers and 740.1K answer views. 5y Not that I care that much either way, but it did expose a lot of corrupt game developers and game journalists. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address.
