I present a counter-example:

Not a huge Metroid fan, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the frustration is due to the fact that there's no Samus, it's not an explorative platformer/FPS, etc. Basically that it's not a 'true' Metroid. I think if they had presented the game as a new IP, it would have been received much more positively.

Maybe people are mad because this is the first Metroid game since 2011, and Other M wasn't particularly good. Not to mention next year is Metroid's 30th birthday, and Nintendo seems to be doing jack shit for it.
