Nothing is wrong with that; until it reaches the point of fetishizing, which is the word I used: were the people praising the presentation flanderize the relationships and circumstances of the character, reducing everything down to “it’s great because it’s so gay!”, regressing us back to the days of tokenism, erasing the complexities of the show (human transsexualism really can’t properly be applied to the Gems’ state of being, Garnet’s stance on identity and relationships get swept under the rug for shipping purposes, Vidallya the married mother being proclaimed to be “totally gay” for Ameythest) and policing the community, (Shaming skinny Rose Cosplayers, the people insisting that human AU Sapphire must always be presented as legless to “fit representation”, insisting Garnet is black by essentially applying racist stereotype connotations to her design details), it’s gross and the exact opposite of empowering.
