I swear to God, this game's story just keeps getting dumber and dumber.

They do manage to accomplish this. Barely. But it took until chapter 17. Of 28. More than half the game. And the only reason they even got Xander, a.k.a. "Mr. Blind Loyalty", onboard was because Not-Cagnazzo briefly did something to make Xander doubt him.
