I'm uncertain about this. While I will almost certainly enjoy the new movies (partly owing to my criminal offense of liking the prequels), there will almost certainly be a hate-dom developing in response. The real question is just how large and vocal said hate-dom will get.

Simmer down – they said that it's canon in respect to itself, and that they're stories that are passed down between denizens of the universe – which, given how convoluted and contradictory the EU is, was always sort of implied. Everything starting with Rebels is going to be canon unless Disney says otherwise.

Also, I'm pretty sure George Lucas had nothing to do with the decision. He's only been involved with the EU a couple of times, and he largely ignores it.
