Cliff Wife refers to Jenny McBride, wife of YouTuber Shonduras (Shaun McBride) who fell off a cliff in a Shonduras YouTube video while hiking.
Origin
On May 23rd, 2019, Shonduras uploaded the video "JENNY FELL OFF THE TRAIL.. scary moment for our family" to YouTube. The video has gained over 617,000 views in five days (shown below). In the video, Jenny McBride tumbles off a trail down onto some rocks in, what looks like, a seven foot drop. The couple reflect on the how scary the incident was for them and then reveal the reaction of their friends and family members when showing them the clip.
Spread
On May 25th, 2019, Twitter users began responding to the over-dramatic aspects of the video like the height of the cliff and the discussion of death. Many began to form the character "cliff wife," similar to that of Curvy Wife or Elf Wife. That day, Twitter user @boring_as_heck[1] tweeted, "Today is another Wife Day on Twitter. In this case it's the classic 'Cliff Wife.'" The tweet gained over 2,800 likes in three days (shown below, left). That same day, Twitter user @spindlypete[2] commented on the recent "endless parade of wives" in a tweet that gained over 4,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).
On May 25th, Twitter user sreekyshooter[3] tweeted, "I love my curvy wife who was pushed off a cliff by MS-13. Please <a href=/memes/sites/gofundme>gofundme</a> me $50,000" which garnered over 400 likes in three days (shown below, left). Twitter user <a href=/memes/people/pixelated-boat>
pixelatedboat[4] commented on both Moby and Cliff Wife in their tweet which accumulated more than 22,300 likes in three days.
That same day, Twitter user @L30L005[5] posted a screenshot of Shonduras' deleted tweet about the video (shown below).
Twitter users began using the the tweet to include videos and GIFs of other viral instances of people or animals falling. Twitter user @nachdermas tweeted, "i watched my wife fall off a cliff… you’re whole world can change in a matter of seconds. mine almost did. a good reminder to be grateful for every moment of it. the good and the bad. the happy and the sad. because you’re here." with a GIF of grape lady which gained over 700 likes in three days (shown below).

Lyric Remixes
On May 25th, 2019, Twitter users began integrating "Cliff Wife" into song lyrics. Twitter user @Merman_Melville[6] integrated cliff wife into Beauty and the Beast lyrics and accumulated over 4,300 likes in three days (shown below, left) Twitter user @thwphipps[7] integrated the words into Simon & Garfunkel lyrics (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 800 likes in three days.
The next day, @allisongeroi[8] tweeted a parody of "Que Sera, Sera" using "cliff wife" (shown below, left). The tweet accumulated over 4,705 likes in two days. The next day @robrousseau[9] tweeted, "give me a cliff wife and free my soul I want you to tumble from a mid-sized knoll for viral fame" (shown below right). The tweet gained over 5,900 likes in a day.
