The problem is that people typically see the Sonic fanbase as one big group, when in fact there's multiple different types of fans. This was an unfortunate byproduct from Sega experimenting a little too much with the blue little hedgehog.
I'll name a few.
Adventure fans:
The fans that desire more action-orientated, "cool" games. They want good gameplay, but with a cool story and a tone that can be taken seriously. While it's not the best Sonic game, Sonic Adventure 2 is a good example of this.
Mario fans:
The ones that want Sonic to be overly simplified to the point of where it starts to become bland. They try to compare Sonic to Mario, even though Sonic was literally intended to be the "anti-Mario". They want stories in Sonic games to be trashed entirely, mainly because Mario survived quite well without one. They even made a cute little song about it.
(Note that I'm not criticizing Mario here. For the most part I think Mario is lit. ?)
Classic fans:
They crave a game that's more reminiscent of the 16-bit era. Basically what Sonic Mania was aiming for.
Classic fanboys:
An uncommon breed of above. Basically the nitpicky type that would complain about Sonic's green eyes (although admittedly no one in the fandom really cared in the first place).
Gameplay fans:
They care about gameplay and nothing else.
