"911 Was an Inside Job" is a slogan associated with the 9/11 Truth movement and other related conspiracy theories that accuse the United States government of orchestrating the September 11th, 2001 attacks as part of a large-scale false flag operation.

Origin

During the weeks after the September 11th, 2001 attacks, many conspiracy theories and conjectures regarding the identity of the perpetrators began flooding online discussion forums across the United States and overseas, which were fueled by the absence of a comprehensive official account of the events from the George W. Bush administration, as well as publication of news reports based on incomplete information and less-than-reliable sources in the media. One of the first reading materials that summarized the leading conspiracy theories in circulation was published on February 1st, 2002 by the conspiracy theorists' website WhatReallyHappened^[4] in an article titled "The 9/11 Hijackings – An Inside Job?

In September 2002, the All People's Coalition held "Bush Did It!" rallies in locations in California, which accused the Bush Administration of destroying the World Trade Center towers in a controlled demolition. In June 2005, the conspiracy site WantToKnow^[5] launched a page titled "9/11 Inside Job?" On March 30th, 2006, the news site SFGate^[3] published an article titled "An Inside Job?", which reported on theologian David Ray Griffin's speculation that the United States government orchestrated the September 11th attacks. On April 19th, 2007, YouTuber WizardofOunces uploaded a video titled "9/11 Inside Job – The Most Damning Evidence Yet," featuring a presentation by American physicist Steven Jones claiming the attacks were actually a controlled thermite explosion (shown below, left). On August 1st, YouTuber Stelios James-Foster uploaded a video titled "911 inside job proof," which criticized many of the claims within the 9/11 Commission Report (shown below, right). Within eight years, the videos gained over one million views each.

On March 7th, 2009, YouTuber Traditional Catholic uploaded a video titled "9/11 Inside Job," featuring speculation that the World Trade Center was destroyed by bombs inside the buildings (shown below, left). On December 23rd, 2010, YouTuber This Is News uploaded a video titled "Proof that 9/11 was an inside job!!!", which contained a narrated slideshow containing satirical arguments claiming the attacks were orchestrated by reptilian humanoid Zionists in the United States government (shown below, right). Within four years, the video gathered upwards of 3.3 million views and 27,400 comments.

On December 12th, 2012, The Onion^[1] published an article written from the perspective of Santa Claus titled "Ho, Ho Ho! 9/11 Was An Inside Job!" On June 17th, 2015, Redditor Quantumhead posted a list titled "10 Reasons Why 9/11 Was Demonstrably An Inside Job" to the /r/conspiracy^[2] subreddit, where it received more than 1,000 votes (85% upvoted) and 800 comments in two months.
