About
Cold, Temperate, Warm Variants is a series of Minecraft memes referencing a 2025 update to the game that adds color variants of animal mobs that appear in cold, temperate and warm biomes. The update started rolling out in testing phases in January 2025. That month, memes about the update started appearing on Minecraft-related subreddits like /r/MinecraftMemes and /r/PhoenixSC, with a format that shows cold, temperate and warm variants of subjects other than Minecraft animals becoming notably popular in February 2025.
Origin
On January 8th, 2025, Mojang posted an article to Minecraft.net[1] announcing snapshot testing for new features in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, including the addition of cold, warm and temperate variants on pigs. On January 10th, a meme was posted to /r/PhoenixSC[2] by u/VirisRJ titled, "Warm/cold pigs have already been added to Bedrock!!!" along with a picture of a pig trapped in a block of ice next to a pig on fire, garnering over 230 upvotes in a month. This is the earliest known meme about the update.
Spread
On January 29th, 2025, Mojang posted another article to Minecraft.net[3] announcing the addition of warm, cold and temperate variant cows, among other additions. On the same day, u/lumfdoesgaming posted a version of the I've only had Arlo for a day meme about the warm variant cow to /r/MinecraftMemes[4] that gained over 2,000 upvotes in roughly a month.
In February, memes about the animal variants became notably popular on Reddit. On February 4th, 2025, u/angry_bird121 made a post to /r/PhoenixSC[5] sharing a meme about the cold, temperate and warm variants of chickens, garnering over 1,600 upvotes in two weeks.
On the same day, u/Xx-mememan69-xX posted a meme imagining what the variants of the villagers might look like to /r/PhoenixSC,[6] garnering over 6,700 upvotes in the same span of time.
On February 7th, u/PhoenixSCManEnjoyer posted a version of the meme to /r/PhoenixSC[7] that gained over 7,100 upvotes in just under two weeks. On February 11th, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition update 1.21.60 was released, officially adding the pig variants to the game.[8]
That same day, u/idklolpog made a post to /r/PhoneixSC[9] using the meme format to criticize the format as an easy way to get karma, garnering over 6,500 upvotes in a week.
On February 17th, u/infinitecrafter posted a version of the meme to /r/MinecraftMemes[10] using the FireFox browser logo to represent warm biome foxes, garnering over 1,300 upvotes in three days.
