Auto Mario (自動マリオ) (2007)

part of a series on Nico Nico Douga

About

Automatic Mario videos are game-play footage of customized MOD levels from Nintendo’s classic franchise Super Mario World. Usually created by fans using Super Mario ROM editors, gameplay in Auto-Mario MODs is seamlessly prearranged by the design of each level and rarely requires input from the player. However, there are other types of Super Mario MOD levels that can be played manually. In short, they’re fan-made videos created for the sake of entertainment, sometimes accompanied by anime music that synchs up with the sound effects in the game (see below for examples).

Origin

  • The earliest example of Automatic Mario on YouTube can be traced back to 2007, titled "Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 March of the Minis! Custom-made Stage: Little Mini Mario (マリオVSドンキーコング2 ミニミニ大行進! 自作ステージ: じどうミニマリオ) and uploaded by a user named sonomamario. The video shows Mini-Mario (a toy version of Mario featured in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2) moving across the stage and completing the level with the aid of various tools and barriers alone.

  • While NND’s wiki entry gives credit to fan bases overseas for development of early Super Mario MODs, Auto-Mario videos became immensely popular on Nico Nico Douga. The earliest version of Auto-Mario debuted on NND on June 9, 2007 and its populary peaked during early 2008.

Derivatives

There are other variations of Auto-Mario, including Hold-B jump mode or synchronized with music using Auto-Mario Sequencer. *[NEED VIDEOS]

May 13, 2008: X-Day on Nico Nico Douga

To many NND users’ dismay, majority of Mario-related content were bulk-deleted on account of copyright infringement in May 2008. This incident became known as “Auto-Mario Wipeout” or “X Day” among NND users who protested this decision. But as it is often the case with other video-sharing communities, most of these videos have been restored by other users since then.

Pre-music Synchronization

Soon after the initial uploads, many videos came to follow it on Nico Nico Douga and Youtube.

Well, like Chris stated somewhere else on the site, all memes are fads but not all fads are memes. The question we’re all probably asking is, “Is this fad a meme?” To that, I say yes.

I say this because this meme has strayed from the original idea of having to control Mario to get from point A to B, getting as much points as possible, to the point of having him get from point A to B, not caring for number of points, as long as he gets there without a single sign of effort being used to do so from the player. Also, it has evolved even more from that aspect to musical synchronization, and that idea’s extremely far from what Mario was originally made for. So, meme it is.

So, with that being said, let’s go to another subject. I see that this has been placed under “Researching”. May I be so kind as to ask you admins what more needs to be researched here so I may help for the betterment of this article?

How can people not consider this an internet meme? It’s a recontextualized idea that’s been subject to parody and imitation and it is also something that has gone viral on the internets. Also, if you think only one person did this, you are way wrong. Dozens of people have done this on the web, especially on NND.

Actually, you clearly state the recontextualisation with many examples of automatic Mario videos in wich the game completes itself a level without the player even touching it but I think it lacks some Music parodies examples.

So, I’m contributing some:

Hope it helps.

Auther’s name on NND is “noe”. And he/she is bakazawa.

Music Synchronization started in 2007. It’s not 2008.
First music synchronization video is here.

The original video was posted on NND on Aug 4, 2007 (JST).

After this video was posted , many followers started to make video by same method.
So, this is the origin of music synchronization.

this is really cool. i checked out niconico’s wiki page & turns out Mario-related MODs and videos were bulk deleted by the host for copyright issues. The scope of Automatic Mario is way beyond that of a fad, it’s a nico nico meme at the least.

Thanks for the correct info. It’s strange that I didn’t find that video on NND.

@ Brad

That’s what I’ve been saying. Auto-Marios are a meme. I’ll fix the article up a bit now using Mona’s info.

And No Japanese feel “X-day accident” as scandal. The articles on NND’s wiki are usually exaggerated like uncyclopedia. So you would be better not translate articles literally.

If you have any question, please ask me. I’m Japanese.

Riiighttt, i totally got the tone of uncyclopedia, but didn’t think to rephrase while translating. would you be interested in building an umbrella article for Mario MODs in general (and other major NND memes)? i’ve been “google translating” nico pages from japanese to korean & it’s worked surprisingly well so far, but could def. use help from native interpreter!

Well, a fad is something that’s only popular for a short period of time right? Check out this graph, I’d say that that rise means that this won’t be dying in a while:

In a way, a meme is something you use to reply to a poster online. Things like LOL WAT or MOOOOAAARRR or FFFUUUUUU (aka rageguy) are memes.

Then again, there are the De-Motivators and Courage Wolf and Pokeparents, and you don’t really use those as ‘replies’, but I hope you understand what I’m saying.
