About

Nico Nico Douga is the most popular video sharing platform in Japan, and as of August 2009 is the 9th most trafficked site in Japan.

Nico Nico Douga (or "smiley videos) began as a Japanese-language mashup of 2Channel and Youtube in 2006, pulling directly from the Youtube source. The main innovation was that Nico Nico was the first site to allow users to embed tags and comments directly into the videos thus tying together conversations happening in 2Channel with videos on Youtube.

The site was so popular during it’s beta release, that Youtube blocked access from the site, forcing Nico Nico Douga to begin hosting their own videos.

Today, many Japanese video memes tend to start on Nico Nico Douga and spread to Youtube, although many appear on both sites roughly simultaneously.

Do you think we have to add in the popular Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga medleys in here, or are they unimportant for the entry?

I haven’t heard of them yet but I’m very new to Nico Nico Douga and a lot of Japanese culture.
Share whatever info you think is relevent, and if anyone else agrees, then we’ll consider it.

It was my otaku cousin who introduced me to Nico Nico Douga, basically. Since she knew that I liked song medleys, she told me to type Nico Nico Douga on Youtube to find some awesome Japanese medleys. I did and they’re relatively the first videos that will pop up on the site. Here’s the complete list of official ones (from the first one made, to the last one):

The Monogatari.wav version doesn’t load well. Since the song is so long, I wanted to find a complete version (there’s none on Youtube). Oh well, here it is broken up into 3 parts:

I’m not really understanding what this is. What makes one of these medleys an Official Nico Nico Douga Medley? Did Nico Nico Douga hold a medley contest? Did they create a theme-medley album? Or are these just medleys created by various Nico Nico Douga users that have some other common thread tying them together that I’m not seeing?

I get it.
The article explains how one user Shimo created a series of videos entitled Kumikyoku, in which he created medleys from masses of popular songs found in other videos on Nico Nico Douga.
This then inspired many others to create their own derivatives based upon this same concept.

I was confused by thinking that there was a specific set of songs I was supposed to be listening for, but the only criteria is that the music be sourced from within Nico Nico Douga’s existing videos.

Yeah, that’s basically it. So, do you think we should add it in or not?

I’m not sure this qualifies as a meme. A site can’t be a meme, unless there are parodies made or whatnot, or at least something to that effect.

Yes, I think the Kumiyoku medly videos constitute a meme.

Okay, I’ll get to making the Kumikyoku entry once I’m done with the Che Guevara one I’m currently working on. That meme is really difficult to summarize since there are a lot of factors surrounding its history.

Yes. This is big meme that is called "本格的ガチムチパンツレスリング(it means muscular guys’ full-fledged underpants-wrestling. “underpants-wrestling” is a coinage.)" in Japan.

Billy Herrington is known as “Anki,” and it really is a huge meme. I think the homophobic English speaking world has shied away from it though.

You guys need to add Matsuoka Shuzo, the ex-pro tennis player who gives motivational speeches. He’s a huge meme around NicoDou, although, again, not that big with the English speaking world.

Are you guys limiting it to JP memes that spread tot he English speaking world (ala geddan or the crazy Ronald McDonald)?

I’m starting to think that Billy Heerington is indeed a Japanese meme to be considered.
An article has already been written about him, but it has been marked as invalid. Not just deadpooled, but invalid. It means that the content seemed to upset at least some admins.
But I don’t think it was because of some homophobic idea. Yaranaika has been submitted and validated.

If there’s a chance to have an article about that meme that doesn’t have too much explicit content that slaps you in the face, I wouldn’t minde give it a try…

Not really. We’ve documented some memes which have been popular only in their specific cultures such as Jia Junpeng (China) and Snel Hest (Sweden).

We’d love to hear more about these Japanese NND memes you’ve suggested if they really are worth documenting. Even better, you can make the articles for them, seeing as you know a little bit of info about each one. Good luck to you.
