Origin

On July 20th, 2011, a photograph of a black security guard walking past several cosplaying Homestuck fans was submitted to the /r/pics[10] subreddit, where it garnered more than 13,500 up votes and 780 comments prior to being archived.

Spread

On April 6th, 2013, Imgur[8] user spamgasm submitted a photo gallery titled “White Folk,” featuring several photographs in which black people appear to be disturbed or annoyed by the presence of white people (shown below). In the first seven months, the gallery accumulated upwards of 35,000 views and 440 comments.

On October 1st, 2013, the Internet humor site Distractify[1] published a compilation of photographs (shown below) titled "26 Black People Not Amused By White People," gaining over 86,000 views and 5,700 Facebook shares in the following eight days.

On October 4th, Imgur[3] user lifeisaroleplayinggame created a image gallery with many of the same photographs. On October 7th, the viral content site BuzzFeed[2] reposted several of the photos from the Distractify post, which garnered more than 770,000 views and 8,000 Facebook shares in the next 48 hours. The same day, the women's interest blog Jezebel[7] posted a link to the Imgur gallery. On October 8th, compilations of notable examples from the series were posted on the Internet humor sites Ebaumsworld[4] and The Roosevelts.[6] The same day, Black Hair Media Forums[5] member keepgrowing posted a thread about the BuzzFeed post.
