The movie Antichrist came out in 2009 by director Lars von Trier and is basically a psychological and erotic horror/thriller movie. In one of the most memorable scenes (you know besides the self genital mutilation and ejaculating blood…) is a fox disemboweling itself, who looks up at William DaFoe in slow motion and says "Chaos Reigns" in a really creepy voice. The fox is part of a trio of animals who represent the "three beggars", a fictional series of star constellations. The fox represents pain, while the deer giving birth to a dead fawn represents grief and a crow buried alive represents despair. The fox's face was done with 3d animation to match the words. The fox was also nominated for Palm Dog award (an award for dogs for best performance) at the Cannes Film Festival but lost to Dug from Up. Chaos Reigns became the catchphrase of the movie.

It became known through parodys, t-shirts (which people ended up wearing to various openings) and whatnot, and also mixing in with other memes. It is also connected with Fantastic Mr. Fox because of the whole fox connection and coming out the same year, as well as William DaFoe having a voice in the movie as Rat.
