About

Electro Swing is a sub-genre of Electronic Dance Music[1] (or EDM) that uses samples of swing or jazz music mixed with dance-style percussion and electronic effects, such as repeated sound bytes or electronic sounds. Many artists also incorporate rap, hip hop, or dubstep into their songs, an example of the last being "ghetto swing", a sub-genre of Electro Swing that uses the same style of synthesized sound for a breakdown.

History

The solidity of Electro Swing as a genre is attributed to Parov Stelar[2], who developed the style of music in 2005. It developed popularity through bands such as Caravan Palace[3] who based their music off of Stelar's original experimentation. Eventually, the genre grew in popularity in European countries such as Britain and France, hitting a peak in 2010.

Internet Presence

Many well-known artists in the genre have used Soundcloud as their starting point, and a strong number of organized collaborations have been started on the site, as well.

Catgroove

One of Stelar's most notable songs, Catgroove has been widely used in many different places, including YouTube and Reddit as background music.
