“Fresh Pots” is an expression uttered several times by American rock musician David Grohl in a studio footage highlighting his caffeine addiction. The video was originally shot during a recording session with his band Them Crooked Vultures in 2009.
On March 15th, 2010, YouTuber themcrookedvultures uploaded a video titled “Dave Grohl in FRESH POTS!”, featuring several clips of Grohl yelling the phrase “fresh pots!”, drinking coffee and frantically playing a variety of musical instruments (shown below). At the end of the video, a slide is shown claiming that Grohl was rushed to the hospital two weeks after the video was shot due to “unwanted physical effects caused by too much caffeine.” In the next three years, the video gained over 3.75 million views and 5,500 comments.
On March 16th, 2010, a Facebook page titled “Fresh Pots!” was launched, which gained more than 4,130 likes in the following three years. On March 23rd, the music news site NME published an article quoting Grohl who confirmed that he had been hospitalized for drinking too much coffee:
“I was doing Vultures stuff at night, Foo Fighters stuff during the day and I had a newborn at home so I was sleeping two-three hours a night on an air mattress in a guest bedroom. And yeah, I had too much coffee, I started to get chest pains so I went to the hospital and they told me to stop drinking the coffee.”
On March 30th, Urban Dictionary user Radical spicy wiener submitted an entry for “Fresh Pots,” defining the term as a “fresh pot of coffee.” On June 22nd, YouTuber kayc13 uploaded a music video remix of the studio footage (shown below, left), which accumulated upwards of 74,200 views and 35 comments in the following three years. On August 27th, 2011, YouTuber ProjectBurncan uploaded a 10-minute loop of Grohl yelling the phrase “Fresh pot!” (shown below, right). Within the first two years, the video received over 79,000 views and 200 comments.
On February 8th, 2013, Grohl participated in an “ask me anything” (AMA) post on Reddit, where he responded to a question regarding his coffee intake following his hospitalization. Within two months, the comment garnered more than 3,100 up votes.
