Gaben is a nickname given to Gabe Newell, the co-founder and leading director of Valve Corporation. Gabe Newell saying “Gaben” has also sprouted a series of video mashups and songs.
The soundclip of Gabe Newell saying “gaben” came from the commentary node of the Gravel Pit in Team Fortress 2
Welcome to Team Fortress 2. After 9 years in development, hopefully it would have been worth the wait. To listen to a commentary node, put your cross hair over the floating commentary symbol and press your primary fire. To stop a commentary node put your cross hair over the rotating node and press the primary fire again. Some commentary nodes may take control of the game in order to show something to you. In these cases, simply press your primary fire again to stop the commentary. In addition, your secondary fire will cycle you through all the commentary nodes in the level. Please let me know what you think after you’ve had a chance to play. I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org and my favorite class is the Spy. Thanks and have fun!
The word “gaben” comes from Gabe Newell’s email address, email@example.com. Other sound clips came from commentary nodes of Portal 2. One of the earliest known and most well-known instances of the use of Gaben is used by remix artist Mastgrr based on Fatboy Slim’s 1998 single Fucking in Heaven, also known for creating the infamous Lil’ Jon remix of Cooking by the Book.
