<p>The origins of the first template, its initial meaning, its initial use, are still unknown. Some said that it came from 4chan. So far, I didn’t find any clues, any topics, thread or archives prior to the variations. I don’t even know if “No Joe, no!” is the right name for that meme either. <br />

<h2>Super Smash Bros Brawl influence</h2>
<p>On April, the 27th 2008, a user called “Shadow Light Master” created a <a href="http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=928518&topic=42799091">topic</a> on the Gamefaqs.com’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl board about “canonical battle”, a common topic for the game’s fans to argue on whose character is the best or is the most suitable to win. However, this time, ms paint comics appeared on it. That’s where the first variation instance can be seen, including two pictures of the same template that inspired the poster. Unfortunately, the links for these two are dead.<br />
Soon, many people saw this as a perfect exploitable for their art => to parody the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game’s inner jokes in a simple, relatively fast editing comic.</p>
<p>On June the 12th 2008, it spread to the Gamespot.com Super Smash Bros Brawl forums, under the name <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/supersmashbros/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-43628025&pid=928518&page=0">Brawl comic strip</a>, leading to 25 pages of pictures and comments.<br />
Then it came back one hour later to the Gamefaqs.com board, keeping the <a href="http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=928518&topic=43628025">Brawl Comic Strip</a> name. It reached 50 pages of images and responses. Besides, the drawing theme was not centered firmly around SSBB’s characters and could expand itself.<br />
These two threads lasted for almost two months before being archived.<br />
<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/supersmashbros/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-44812661&pid=928518&page=1">Another thread</a> eventually started afterward, without gaining much attention though.</p>
<h2>Presence elsewhere</h2>
<p>Then, It spread to 4chan’s /v/ board (although it’s really hard to say if there were round trips between 4chan and others board here) as <a href="http://4chanarchive.org/brchive/dspl_thread.php5?thread_id=18252858&inline_imaeg=1">this instance</a> from August 2008 shows the presence of one strip, Snake’s one, in a panorama of diverse mspaint related stuff.<br />
It also went to Nintendo related forums, for the most part, like <a href="http://www.wiipals.net/Forum/f42/no-joe-no-45585.html">this one</a><br />
More recently, it reached <a href="http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=783230">Facepunch forum’s lands</a><br />
A contest took place with this template there.</p>
<p>Finally, it seems that variations of that comic strip are going back and forth on 4chan from time to time.</p>
