Oblivious Suburban Mom is an advice-animal image macro series portraying a mother who is unaware of just exactly what activities her children are partaking in. Unlike Sheltering Suburban Mom, Oblivious Suburban Mom is characterized as an optimistic, trusting parent completely ignorant her child’s delinquent behaviors.
The base photo was used to advertise jeans sold at retailers JCPenny and later, K-Mart, some time previous to May 2009. The stock image was used again in May 2011 in an article on Cougar Life Review. Soon after this post, the first instance of the image macro was created on QuickMeme in early July 2011.
The image macro made its first appearance on Reddit in /r/AdviceAnimals on July 5th, 2011. On July 8th 2011, the images were added to voting site Ranker, whose link was posted to Digg on the 13th. Instances began appearing on Tumblr as early as July 10th and as a Tumblr tag by July 15th. A compilation was posted to FunnyJunk on July 16th. The macro saw a resurgence in November 2011 when compilations were posted to eBaum’s World and Buzzfeed.
Search for Oblivious Suburban Mom began in July 2011, dipped that September, but has been increasing since.
